What is GPS Tracking?
All GPS tracking systems are based on the functionality of a GPS receiver which can constantly determine it’s own position by the signals it receives from satellites above it, which are in in orbit around planet Earth.
The receiver is a small box of electronics which can work out it’s location, speed, direction and time by measuring how long it takes for each signal to reach it from a minimum of three different satellites.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a group of 24 satellites all around the Earth developed by the US Defense Department and currently managed by the US Air Force.
The system was originally a military navigation system only, but was made available to everyone by President Reagan back in 1983. Since then GPS has become the standard system for all navigation aids worldwide.
What is a Vehicle Tracking System?
The main function of a vehicle tracking system is to enable someone to know where a vehicle is at any time.
In order to do this a GPS unit needs the ability to transmit the information it knows about itself (eg: it’s current location) to whoever needs it.
A vehicle tracking system therefore incorporates a GPS unit with a wireless transmitter that operates just like a cell phone to send the location information, via an antenna attached to the vehicle, to a central computer located within the cell phone network.
The central computer will then make the location data available over the internet or via a private network to those who need to receive it.
